Setting the outgoing queues

In order to send messages you need a SMTP server that handles email transport on the Internet. eMill lets you use external servers to deliver your mailing. The Built-in mailer provided with eMill is an SMTP relay server, which is only able to send and not receive email. The Built-in relay server feature is also known as 'Direct Send' or 'Direct Delivery' feature.

From the Tools/Options menu, click on the Outgoing Queues tab:
Check / uncheck the Simulate box to test the mailer process. The SMTP session will be started and a RSET command sent to abort transmission. Messages will appear as having been sent in the mailing queues, but recipients will not receive anything.

Adding a server:

Click on Add button. The Add an outgoing queue dialog box appears:
Check / uncheck the Enabled box to add the server to your outgoing server pool. Several servers can be enabled for a mailing and the load balancing is determined by throughput capacity, the connection count.
Enter a unique Queue name to identify this outgoing queue.
Enter a Connection Count: this setting determines the maximum number of simultaneous connections between eMill and the server. To optimize, start with 1 and raise the value over time until you reach any limit with your server or bandwidth. 14 should reflect fair bandwidth and server performance when using a relay server, 50 should give good results when using direct delivery method. Too high a value could be counterproductive.
Check Direct Delivery to send message using the eMill intergrated SMTP server. Some limitations may apply to the use of the builtin-in SMTP server.
Check Use SMTP Relai Server to send message using an external SMTP server. This may typically be your company SMTP server or your Internet Service Provider SMTP server.
Enter the relay Server name (i.e.: smtp.domain.com) or the relay server IP address.
Enter a Port to connect to the relay server. The standard port for SMTP is 25. Note that Port 587 is widely used because port 25 is often abused by malware to spread worms and spam.
Select the Authentication method and enter the login information.
- None: Most used method. This method applies when you don't need a login and password to connect to the SMTP Server. It identifies you by detecting your IP address or the domain name of the message sender.
- Basic (Login): This method applies when the SMTP server identifies you by using a login and a password without encryption.
- POP3 Login: This method applies when the SMTP server checks if you open successfully a POP session before allowing an SMTP session.
- Windows Security (process account): This method applies when you use the account on which eMill server runs (by default, the system account) to be identified by the SMTP Server.
- Windows Security (specific account): This method applies when you use a specific Windows account to be identified by the SMTP Server. When you want to connect to an Exchange Server, you must select this method and enter a user account (login & password) that is known to Exchange Server.
If you don't know which authentication method to use, please contact your network administrator.

Advanced settings:

Click on the Advanced tab:
The Host Name field contains the value that is transmitted during the SMTP connection. If this value is empty, the full machine name (FQDN) is used instead. When using the Direct Delivery mode, this name should match the reverve IP resolution name.
The IP Binding list can be use to specify the IP address that will be used to send messages. By default, the address is automatically selected. When eMill is installed on a server machine with several IPs, it may be necessary to specify the sending IPs.
The Maximum message sent per minute limitation can be use to limit the message throughtput. Some Internet Service Provider impose this kind of limitation to use their relai SMTP server.
When the Maximum message sent per session option is enabled, eMill will close the connection when the specified message count has been sent, for each connection to the SMTP server. Note that this option doesn't have any effect when using the Direct Delivery mode.

Modify a server:

Select a server from the list and click on Modify.
Modify the information from the Modify outgoing queue dialog box (refer to procedure above).

Removing a server:

Select a server from the list and click on Remove.

Security: Some email servers implement various strategies to limit the risks of improper use (e.g. successfully opening a POP session before allowing an SMTP session). Check with your network administrator if you are experiencing problems with your outgoing queues.
